People often ask me what to wear for their family sessions. I know how stressful it is to find the perfect outfit, not just for yourself, but for the entire family. What color scheme do I use? Do we match enough? Are we too “matchy-matchy?”
So here is where I start. I pick one person (usually a female in the family) to be the standout by wearing a floral print with several colors, at least three, that I absolutely love. From there, you can pull out all the colors from that print, and find some solids and other complementing patterns like polka dots, stripes, or checkered for the rest of the family. Don’t be afraid to clash patterns!
ACCESSORIZE, ACCESSORIZE, ACCESSORIZE! Layering and adding texture will help complete your look. Wear big, chunky earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Throw on a thick, cozy scarf or one with a bold pattern. Wear a blazer with a tie or pin a large, beautiful flower on your cardigan sweater. Make a statement with some bright colored shoes. Have your little ones sport a fun hat or put a cute headband or bow in their hair.
My favorite places to shop for my kids are The Gap, Old Navy, JCrew, Forever 21, H&M, Janie and Jack, Gymboree, Zulilly, and Urban Outfitters, just to name a few. Just rembember, it’s not all about the clothes. Your mood and emotions will be reflected in your images, so just take a deep breath, relax, and have fun!
